If awarded this grant we would employ an entry level part-time social worker who will dedicate his/her time in the hematology/oncology division. This new position will be focused on resource management, helping with camp applications, assisting families with financial grants, calling and following up with families so that our primary social worker can focus on clinical and direct advocacy work as well as counseling with our oncology patient and families. We would like to send our main oncology social worker to the annual Association of Pediatric Oncology Social Workers Conference in 2018 so $750 would be used towards conference registration fees so our social worker can continue to learn up to date methods and advocacy trainings, network with other social workers, and continue their educational field.

The remainder of the funds (see proposed budget attached) will be spent on funding for direct patient assistance. This will include medications needed to treat malignancies in patients with insufficient funding; gasoline cards and lodging to help with traveling to appointments, treatments or procedures; educational materials, such as log books for chemotherapy. We have had some patients whose insurance has lapsed or been denied, but still need chemotherapy medications. Funding must be obtained to keep these children on their treatment plan.
