National Youth Ambassador

Jordyn, 13

Hi, I’m Jordyn Hernandez and I am a Pediatric Cancer Survivor.

I am honored to be the National Youth Ambassador for Hyundai Hope On Wheels. I am an 8th grader from California, and I am over 4 years cancer free.

In 2013 I was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma. What we thought was an allergic reaction turned out to be a mass in my chest. My treatment lasted for about 2 ½ years which consisted of many hospital overnights, medical tests, blood tests, and all sorts of doctor appointments.

I was young and everything happened so fast. To make cancer simpler to understand I pretended as if I was a video game. The video game was me killing the cancer or what I would call it, “The Blob”. The chemo was my power-ups to fight “The Blob”. It made such a complicated topic easier for me to understand. As scary as it all seemed I knew that my family, my doctors, and nurses were doing everything they could to get me through it. I never saw doubt in their eyes.

A bit of wisdom that I like to share from my experience is if you have a family member or friend who has been diagnosed with pediatric cancer, don’t act differently around them because of all the new stuff going on, like chemo or losing their hair. They want to have something normal that be reminded of a time before. If possible, bring them something that reminds them of home so they can have comfort in a place that is so different.

I want all kids that have been diagnosed with cancer and their families to know, there is always hope. Pediatric Cancer is beatable. You are not alone, and this is a fight that we fight together.

I want to spread the word that you can find hope in any situation. Win! You Can. End of story!

Hyundai is committed to curing pediatric cancer and these are some of the photos of our National Youth Ambassadors supporting the fight. Through out the years we have a lot to be proud of. Special events and community activities show how far Hope On Wheels can go.
