Ethan is our little superhero. At 21 months old, Ethan was diagnosed with high risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Ethan was a normal toddler that was learning new words each day, and the center of attention in our home (being that he was the youngest). Cancer turned our world upside down. Ethan went from playing trains to flushing his own central line. From learning new words like car, to learning new words like vincristine (chemo), and knowing the name and dosage of dozens of medications. Cancer became a new “normal” to us.
Ethan’s cancer was aggressive. He fought his cancer for three years, including two relapses, a bone marrow transplant, and three experimental treatments. These experimental treatments gave us a full extra year with Ethan. In October of 2014, Ethan passed away, just a month before his 5th birthday. The week before he passed away, we were able to celebrate Halloween, his 5th birthday (a month early), and Christmas all in the same week, with the loving support of many throughout of community, and even throughout the world!
Our family has learned many things throughout Ethan’s cancer treatment. We learned that there are many, many good people in this world who are willing to step in and lighten our load. We learned that we are stronger than we thought we were. We learned to have faith in God’s plan for us. We learned to be more compassionate to other peoples situations. Most importantly, we learned to never take for granted the time that we have with our loved ones, because you never know when it will be gone.
